// LIVE/24 (CORE MODULE)

Broadcasting space in its pre-built, post-built, and unbuilt state.
Monday 05 - Saturday 10.08.2024

In the fluid expanse of digital and physical interactions, translocations are a dynamic exploration of architectural space in its most ephemeral forms.

This year, our focus sharpens on the ever-evolving narratives of spaces that are broadcasted, undergoing transformation, or drifting into oblivion. Amidst the rapid global shifts affecting nations like Tuvalu, to the displacement of communities like in Grindavik. This programme captures the essence of spaces in flux and the communities that inhabit them.

// PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

Broadcasting Transient Spaces: We delve into the life cycles of architectural spaces — those being rebuilt, those that have served their purpose, and those that never came to be. Through live broadcasts and digital storytelling, we document and analyse these transformations.

Exploring New Zones: Leveraging advanced digital connectivity, we ping from location to location, from the submerged atolls to remote, culturally rich landscapes, exploring and documenting these areas as emergent zones of architectural and cultural significance.

Creating Digital Monuments and Narratives: Each explored space will be digitally archived and transformed into interactive experiences or virtual monuments, offering a multi-perspective view of their historical and contemporary significance.

Empowering Dislocated Communities: By focusing on communities that lack a physical anchor, the programme aims to provide a digital platform for these populations to reconnect with their heritage and redefine their communal identities through spatial computing.

// METHODOLOGY

Satellite Samplers and Environmental Data: Utilising satellite technology to continuously adapt our virtual reconstructions to real-time environmental changes, ensuring our digital spaces are reflective of their physical counterparts.

Digital and Physical 'Hooks': These tools will allow users, both virtual and physical, to interact with and reinterpret spaces through a collective digital lens, enhancing the understanding and appreciation of architectural heritage and its transient nature.

Time-based Media as a Design Tool: Engaging with dynamic media to craft experiences that not only represent but also actively shape the architectural narrative, turning viewers into participants of a global architectural discourse.

Exploring the Network State: Inspired by Balaji Srinivasan’s notion of the "Network State," our programme investigates how decentralised networks can empower communities to form new, digital-first societies, redefining citizenship and national identity in an era of rising waters and shifting borders.

Engaging with the Online Outdoors®: The Online Outdoors® framework will guide our exploration of digital landscapes as spaces of interaction, intervention, and identity formation, providing a new arena where digital and physical realms converge and coexist.

// ELIGIBILITY

This programme is designed for architects, designers, technologists, and artists who are driven by a curiosity about the convergence of digital and physical realms. Participants who are eager to push the boundaries of traditional architectural practice and explore how emerging technologies can redefine our understanding of space and community.

// FEES

The AA Visiting School charges a participation fee of £370. Additionally, a mandatory AA Visiting Membership fee of £60 is required from all participants.
Current AA students are eligible for a 20% bursary. The adjusted fee will be applied automatically upon logging in during registration. If you encounter any issues, please contact the Visiting School office.

// PROGRAMME IMPACT

Participants will emerge with a refined ability to design for both permanence and transience, understanding how digital tools can enhance or redefine physical spaces. Utilise digital platforms to advocate for and empower dislocated communities, offering them a voice and space in the global architectural narrative. Not least, to innovate within the architectural field by integrating real-time data and environmental responsiveness into their designs, fostering a new form of dynamic and adaptive architecture.

// IOEZ

Inhabitants Of Exclusion Zone (IOEZ) exists as a fluid, ever-evolving collective united by curiosity, inspiration and a wealth of knowledge. It addresses the urgent and profound need for spatial innovation, responding to the challenges faced by our planet and society. IOEZ is actively seeking new members who are eager to contribute to a bold reimagining of the architectural practice, engage in reshaping what space can represent in a world that is increasingly decentralised and digitised – pioneering new paradigms for how we live, interact, and build our future environments.
